Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Stephen Mulder DDS is pleased to provide our patients in Grand Rapids, Michigan and all of West Michigan with beautiful porcelain veneers – one of the most sophisticated cosmetic dentistry treatments available. We provide traditional veneers as well as LUMINEERS®, a brand of no-prep veneers. Veneers don’t just improve the smile. They completely transform it by concealing flaws in the teeth with tiny porcelain shells that are bonded to the fronts of the teeth. Veneers provide beautiful, lasting results; visit our Smile Makeover Gallery to see some porcelain veneers before and after pictures, and contact Dr. Stephen Mulder DDS for more information on how you, too, can obtain the smile of your dreams with veneers.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of translucent porcelain that are bonded to the fronts of teeth to conceal flaws. The porcelain is incredibly durable and so realistic-looking that veneers are indistinguishable from natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are a more conservative option than porcelain crowns, since they require less tooth structure to be removed. When a patient receives a smile makeover with veneers, he or she can expect straighter, whiter, and more even-looking teeth – a complete smile transformation.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Because of the many benefits of porcelain veneers, they are a popular choice among our patients. Among these benefits is the fact that porcelain veneers can camouflage a range of dental problems, including:

  • Crooked teeth – Veneers are bonded to the surfaces of teeth to make them appear straight and perfectly aligned without traditional braces.
  • Discoloration – Veneers cover discoloration and stains and are crafted to match the natural teeth flawlessly. This makes them a longer-lasting alternative to teeth whitening.
  • Worn teeth – If a tooth is worn down, we can have veneers crafted to add length to the tooth, making the smile look younger and stronger.
  • Chipped teeth – Porcelain veneers completely conceal chips and other imperfections in the tooth, providing a beautiful, unblemished result.

Veneers can also be used as a non-invasive wrinkle eraser; by improving the way in which the teeth support the lips and surrounding skin, veneers can diminish wrinkles and provide a more youthful appearance.

The Veneers Procedure

The porcelain veneers process begins with a complimentary consultation at which you and your dentist will discuss the placement procedure and the types of veneers available. If you do in fact choose to have your smile made over with veneers, you will return for a second visit to our office to have the porcelain veneers placed.

We offer advanced pain management options, including sedation dentistry, to make the process as comfortable and pain-free as possible. If you are receiving traditional veneers, the dentist will begin this visit by administering a local anesthesia (the LUMINEERS® placement process is slightly different). He will then carefully remove a small portion of the tooth to accommodate the veneer. Next, he will make a mold of the teeth and mouth, which he will send to the dental laboratory that will craft the veneers. Finally, he will place a temporary veneer, which you will wear until the permanent version is ready, at which point you will return to our office to have the veneers placed. During this visit, the dentist will apply a local anesthesia before removing the temporary veneers. He will then bond the permanent veneers to the teeth and buff them to a shine.

After the Veneers Procedure

If, after veneers placement, you experience some tooth sensitivity, it will generally diminish within two weeks. Although porcelain veneers are quite durable, you should avoid grinding your teeth or biting down on hard objects or foods (ie. ice and nuts) to prolong their usefulness. It is also important to practice proper oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing and regular dental exams. With proper upkeep, porcelain veneers can last for many years.

When appropriate, we can provide LUMINEERS® – no-prep veneers that do not require reduction of the natural tooth. LUMINEERS® are super-thin (about the size of a contact lens) and are bonded directly to the surface of the tooth. If you are interested in LUMINEERS®, Dr. Stephen Mulder will discuss this option with you to determine whether it is the best choice for your smile makeover.
